Types of fly screens in Dubai and which fits your windows

Walk through any Dubai apartment or villa and you find two things fighting for the same opening: airflow and insects. A fly screen solves both. The one you choose depends less on style and more on how your window actually opens. Get that match right and the screen disappears into daily life. Get it wrong and you fight it every time you want fresh air.

Start with how your window opens

Before you look at a single screen, look at the window. Casement windows swing open on a side hinge, inwards or outwards. Sliding windows move sideways along a track. Tilt-and-turn windows do both. The screen has to work around that movement without blocking it.

The first question is never which screen you prefer; it is how the window opens. Most screening mistakes come from ordering a screen built for the wrong opening. Measure the clear opening rather than the whole frame, and note which way the sash travels.

Fixed fly screens

Fixed screens sit permanently in the opening. They are the simplest type: mesh stretched over an aluminium frame, screwed or clipped into place. Because nothing moves, they seal well and take heavy use without complaint.

The trade-off is access. If you need to reach through the opening, to clean the outside glass, water plants on a ledge, or pass something through, a fixed screen is in your way. For windows you never open, or for the fixed half of a sliding window, they are hard to beat.

Sliding fly screens

A sliding screen runs on its own track, usually parallel to the window. You get airflow and access at once: roll it across to close, slide it back to reach out.

The catch is the track. In older frames there may be no spare channel, so the fit depends on the depth available. On bedrooms and living-room sliders a sliding screen is the natural match, and it pairs well with a sliding door fly screen.

Pleated fly screens

Pleated mesh folds like a concertina into a slim stack when open. That slim stack is the point: it takes little space at the side, so it suits narrow openings and doors where you do not want a panel sticking out.

Pleated screens also handle wide openings well, because the folds take up the slack. They suit patio doors and windows that need to open wide, and our pleated fly screen fitting is built for exactly that.

Retractable (roll-up) fly screens

Retractable screens roll into a cassette at the top or side when not in use: no panel in view, nothing to walk around.

That is where the mechanism earns its keep: roll-up screens suit doors used constantly and openings where appearance matters. A retractable roll-up screen keeps the mesh tidy until it is needed.

Hinged fly screens

A hinged screen works like a second, mesh-only window: it opens on its own hinge. You get full access to the opening and a rigid panel that stands up to daily swinging.

Hinged screens suit casement windows and single doors. They are the most window-like of the options, which is why they fit homes where the screen should look like part of the joinery.

Matching the screen to the window

A quick guide:

  • Casement window that swings open: hinged or fixed.
  • Sliding window: sliding or retractable.
  • Sliding glass door: sliding or pleated.
  • Narrow or awkward opening: pleated.
  • Door in constant use: retractable.
  • Window you never open: fixed.

Two windows in the same room can call for different screens depending on how each is used.

Sizing, mesh and fitting

Mesh choice matters too. Standard insect mesh keeps out flies and mosquitoes, a tighter weave helps against smaller insects, and pet-resistant mesh is worth it on any screen a cat or dog will lean on. Frame colour is usually matched to the window so it disappears.

Every screen we fit is measured on site. Off-the-shelf sizes rarely match Dubai window frames, and a screen that does not sit flush leaves a gap, and a gap is all an insect needs. If you are unsure which type suits your windows, the fastest path is a visit from our fly screen installation in Dubai team. If an existing screen is torn or off its track, fly screen repair is often quicker than a new build.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fly screen suits Dubai apartments?
Most apartments mix sliding and casement windows, so sliding and hinged screens together are common. No single type wins everywhere. It depends on how each window opens and how often you use it.

Do fly screens block airflow?
Not meaningfully. Insect mesh stops flies and mosquitoes but lets air move through. What blocks airflow is a solid panel, not the mesh.

Can a screen be fitted without drilling?
Some frames allow a clip-in or tension fit, but most installations screw into the frame or reveal. We check this on site rather than promising it in advance.

How do I know if my frame can take a screen?
We check the depth of the frame and the size of the clear opening. If there is a spare channel for a sliding screen, good. If not, a fixed or hinged solution usually fits.
