Shower Partition Installed With Glue Only? What a Proper Fit Uses
One resident’s account of a shower partition installation went like this: the company glued the glass directly to the wall and floor – no brackets, no U-channels, no structural clamps – the panel felt unstable, one panel had already cracked at the attachment point, and the glass visibly shook when touched. That story is more common than it should be, and it usually comes down to how the panel was fixed rather than what the glass is made of.
Adhesive has a supporting role, not a load-bearing one
Structural sealant is used in shower installations, but as part of a fixing system, not as the system itself. A panel held only by adhesive carries its full weight through a thin bond line, with every knock, door movement and cleaning cycle working at that same joint. Mechanical fixings – brackets, clamps, channels – take the load and hold the panel in position, and the sealant then does what it is good at: keeping water where it belongs.
What a proper installation uses
- A U-channel or base channel bedded along the floor line so the panel sits in a track instead of balancing on it
- Wall brackets or clamps fixed into solid backing, not into hollow board or a single tile
- Hinges anchored to a fixed panel or a wall that can take the swing load
- Panels cut and squared to the actual opening, plumb and level before anything is bonded
- Sealant at the wet edges as a water barrier, not as the only thing holding the glass
Warning signs of a bad fit
The thread’s symptoms are the classic list: the panel shakes when touched, there is movement at the attachment point, a crack appears near the fixings, adhesive residue is smeared across tiles, and tiles were chipped during the work. Add uneven gaps between panel and wall, a door that drops slightly when it closes, and sealant that keeps tearing at the same spot. Any one of these is worth getting looked at early – movement at a cracked point in tempered glass does not end well.
Glass thickness is decided by the panel, not the shelf
A panel that feels too thin usually is too thin for its size. Thickness is chosen from the height and width of the panel, whether it is hinged or fixed, and what it is anchored to – a taller panel spans more and needs more glass behind it. Our measuring and fitting guide covers how openings are measured before any glass is cut.
Putting it right
For a partition that is already in and moving, the fix starts with an inspection: what the panels are actually fixed to, whether the fixings are into solid backing, and whether the glass is cracked or only loose. Where the panel can be re-fixed properly, it is re-fixed. Where the glass has cracked at an attachment point, that panel is replaced – cracked tempered glass cannot be salvaged, and we set out the reasoning in cracked glass: repair or replace. The service page covers the full scope of shower glass work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a frameless partition weaker than a framed one?
Neither is automatically stronger – the fixing method decides that. A frameless panel carried on proper channels and brackets into solid walls is rigid; a framed panel glued in place is not. Ask what is holding the panel, not whether it has a frame.
How do I check a new installation before accepting it?
Push gently on the upper corner of each panel: it should not flex or rattle. Check that fixings sit on solid backing, the panel is plumb, sealant lines are even, and there are no chips at the fixing points. Photograph everything while the installers are still on site.
Can a glued-in panel be saved?
If the glass is intact and the panel can be taken out and re-fixed into channels or brackets, yes. If the panel has cracked at the attachment point, it needs replacing – and the new one should be properly fixed from the start.
