Keeping neighbourhood cats out: microchip and lockable flap options
If a neighbourhood cat has worked out your cat flap, you have three options: lock it, replace it, or fit one that only opens for your pet. A microchip flap does the last one. It reads your cat’s chip and stays shut for everyone else. It is one of the more common jobs in our pet door installation service, especially in flats where two cats share one entrance.
The stray-cat problem
An unlocked flap is an open door. Neighbouring cats come in to eat, mark, or simply settle somewhere quiet. It is not aggression, it is opportunity, and a cat that has found a food bowl once will keep checking. Locking the flap solves that but locks your own cat out too, which is exactly why chip-reader flaps exist.
It is worth knowing that a visiting cat is mostly a nuisance rather than a hazard, but it does unsettle the cat that lives there. The household pet starts waiting to be let in rather than using the flap, which is the real cost.
How chip recognition works
A microchip flap has a reader built into the frame. Your cat’s implanted chip, the same one a vet scans, carries a unique number. You register that number with the flap. When the cat approaches, the reader recognises the chip and unlocks. Any animal without a registered chip finds the flap stays shut.
Set-up is usually a couple of minutes: power the flap, put it into learning mode, and walk your cat through once so the reader records the chip. After that the flap does the work every time, with nothing to carry or attach to the collar.
Multi-pet households
Most chip readers store more than one chip, so several cats can be registered to the same flap. This is what makes a chip flap work in a home with two or three cats where only one should be going out at night.
It also lets you register an indoor-only cat and an outdoor cat without one blocking the other. Check the model’s capacity before buying, because some entry-level readers hold only a couple of registrations, and a three-cat home will outgrow that quickly.
Manual lock modes
Beyond chip control, most flaps offer manual lock modes: fully open, fully locked, in-only and out-only. In-only is useful at night, to bring a cat in and keep it in. Out-only lets a cat leave while keeping others from following it back in.
These modes are set on the flap itself, so you can change them as routines change. The most practical setup for most homes is a chip-controlled mode during the day and a manual in-only lock at night.
What microchip flaps do not solve
Be clear on the limits. A chip flap keeps out animals without a registered chip while the flap is closed. It cannot stop an animal pushing a flap that is already propped open, and it cannot fix a flap that is simply the wrong size for the cat using it.
An unregistered or unreadable chip will not work until it is sorted, so test the registration with each pet before relying on it. Batteries need watching too: a flap that is out of power usually locks, so keep a spare set and a reminder.
Fitting one in Dubai
Microchip flaps fit into glass doors, timber doors, walls and sliding-door panels like any other flap, with the reader built into the frame. If you are renting, a renter-friendly pet door fitted into a removable panel avoids altering the original door.
If you would rather not cut the glass at all, the panel method in our guide to installing a cat door without cutting is worth reading first. Our pet door installation service fits flaps of every kind, and for a chip-specific job the microchip cat flap team can advise on the right model for your cat and door.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my cat need a microchip already?
Yes. The flap reads the chip your cat already has, the same one a vet would scan. If there is no chip, that has to be sorted before a chip flap is any use.
Can one flap recognise several cats?
Usually yes. Most readers store multiple chips, which suits homes with more than one pet where not all should be in and out freely.
What happens if the chip is not read?
The flap stays locked to that animal. Check that the chip is registered correctly and that nothing is interfering with the reader before assuming a fault.
Will a chip flap keep out a determined cat?
It keeps out animals without a registered chip while the flap is closed. It cannot stop an animal entering through a flap being held or propped open.
